Canelo Alvarez became a three-time super middleweight champion on Saturday by scoring a unanimous-decision win against Christian Mbilli.
Alvarez (64-3-2, 39 KOs), a former junior middleweight, middleweight and light heavyweight champion and two-time undisputed super middleweight king, picked up the previously unbeaten Mbilli's WBC 168-pound title with the victory while headlining The Ring's "Mexico Versus The World" show in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Heading into the fight, the 36-year-old Alvarez alluded that he preferred to fight again as soon as February.
Alvarez, The Ring's No. 1-ranked contender in the division, should be inclined to face fellow champions in the division, outside of former-foe-turned-friend Jaime Munguia, the WBA titleholder.
The only other active champion in the division is IBF titlist Osleys Iglesias (16-0, 15 KOs). The WBO title is vacant and up for grabs during the January 23 bout between Jacob Bank (20-0, 11 KOs) and Janibek Alimkhanuly (17-0, 12 KOs). The Ring title is also vacant.
Meanwhile, WBC interim champion Lester Martinez (21-0-1, 17 KOs) and Hamzah Sheeraz (24-0-1, 19 KOs) were both interested observers who watched Alvarez outbox Mbilli (29-1-1, 24 KOs) from ringside.
All things considered, who should Alvarez fight next?
